Presidential Election
Soon its time to elect a new President in the US, after the four yearlong term. Everyone is talking about it everywhere, which makes it one of the most discussed topics in school, at home and in the TV. The authority of the President of the US is one of the most powerful positions in the world. The election is every election year on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November, which is the 8th of November this year. Two month later on the Inauguration Day the newly elected President takes the oath of office and is sworn in by a Justice of the US Supreme Court. The electoral campaigns begin over a year in advance, because only one candidate from each party can compete on the 8 of November. In the US there are only two big parties and a lot of candidates want to represent the party in the election. In the year before many of those stop their campaigns before the so-called primary elections, because they realize that they don't have a chance to win. In the primary election for every party one candidate is being elected to compete for the democratic or republican party on the 8th. Till then we just have to hope that the Americans make the right decision. Not only in Washington people are voting, but also here in Duxbury! One of the oldest Town meeting took place here. Every citizen over the age of 18 gets a clicker at the entrance so that they can vote over the discussed topics. At such a meeting, important decisions are made for the town. Since everyone can share their opinion, the meeting to extend over several days. See you soon, Franzi

US-Präsidentschaftswahl
Bald ist es wieder soweit und nach vier Jahren wird ein neuer Präsident für die USA gewählt. Das ist zurzeit auch mit Abstand das am meisten diskutierte Thema in der Schule, daheim und im TV. Das Amt des Präsidenten der USA wird als eines der mächtigsten Ämter der Welt angesehen. Der Wahltag ist in jedem Wahljahr am Dienstag nach dem ersten Montag im November, also dieses Mal am 8. November 2016. Am sogenannten “Inauguration Day” wird der neu gewählte Präsident in sein Amt von einem Richter des obersten Gerichtshofs eingeschworen. Der Wahlkampf und die Debatten beginnen schon mehr als ein Jahr im Voraus. Der Grund dafür ist, dass am 8. November nur ein Kandidat für jede Partei antreten kann. In den USA gibt es hauptsächlich zwei große Parteien, für die sich zu Beginn viele Kandidaten aufstellen lassen. Innerhalb des Jahres zuvor treten jedoch bis zu den sogenannten „Primary Elections“ wieder viele Kandidaten zurück. Bei den Primary Elections wird für jede Partei ein Kandidat gewählt, der für die Demokratische bzw. Republikanische Partei am 8. November für die Präsidentschaftswahl antreten wird. Bis dahin können wir nur hoffen, dass die Amerikaner die richtige Entscheidungen treffen werden! Aber nicht nur in Washington D.C. geht es derzeit um Wahlen, sondern auch in meinem kleinen Dorf Duxbury. Dort hat nämlich eines der ältesten „Town Meetings“ der USA stattgefunden. Jeder Bürger über 18 Jahren bekommt am Eingang eine Fernbedienung, mit der er dann bei den einzelnen Themen mit abstimmen kann. Bei so einem Dorftreffen wird über brennende

On the 17th of March we celebrated Saint Patrick's Day and you can see that everywhere, because the color on this day is green. It is the memorial day of the Irish Bishop Saint Patrick and he is known for bringing christianity to Ireland. Ireland? We are in America! Yes, a lot of Americans, especially on the East Coast, are originally from Ireland, so they celebrate it in the US as well. My host family is included. Many people believe that in the U.S., Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated even more than in Ireland. This is because they spend most of the day with their families. The attitude of Americans is, „Let's go the whole hog.“ They have green beer, colored food, people wear green clothes and they even color rivers green. In some cities they also have street parades. Although we celebrate this day in some parts of Germany, it is an amazing tradition to see here in the U.S.
Happy Saint Patrick's Day!

Am 17.03. wurde hier der Saint Patrick's Day gefeiert und das war nicht zu übersehen, denn die Farbe dieses Tages ist grün. Es ist der Gedenktag des irischen Bischofs Sankt Patrick. Dieser gilt als erster christlicher Missionar in Irland. Irland? Wir sind doch in Amerika. Da sehr viele Amerikaner, vor allem an der Ostküste, so wie auch meine Gastfamilie, Wurzeln in Irland haben, wird auch hier dieser irische Feiertag groß zelebriert. Viele meinen sogar, dass der Tag in Amerika größer gefeiert wird als in Irland selbst, denn dort ist es mehr ein Tag den man mit der Familie verbringt. Das Motto der Amerikaner ist jedoch: „Wenn schon denn schon.“ Es gibt grünes Bier und grün gefärbte Lebensmittel, die Menschen tragen grüne Kleidung und sogar Flüsse werden grün eingefärbt. In einigen Städten werden sogar Straßenparaden veranstaltet. Obwohl dieser Tag auch in manchen Regionen in Deutschland gefeiert wird, ist es einmalig, so eine Tradition hier in den USA mitzuerleben.
